We have been supporting folks in micro and small charities to build financial confidence since 2018. We provide high quality resources, learning opportunities   and training. We have worked with 100s of social leaders; through financial uncertainty, through financial difficulty and through growth.

Welcome to the wonderful world of finance

Getting on top of - and staying on top of - the numbers is an essential job in any small charity.

It is how we stay compliant.

It is how we keep the lights on.

It is how we make social change happen.

It is how we sleep at night.

Let's get our finance ducks in a row

Many folks tell us that finance can feel daunting.  We get it. It can feel that way at the beginning. We recommend keeping it simple and starting off with:

A budget and cashflow forecast.

A bookkeeping system.

A monthly finance pack.

A set of financial controls.

Changing the world, one number at a time

Ultimately, we are trying to prepare budgets which cover the full cost of each activity and build and maintain a reserves fund for the rainy day. We also need to ensure that cash arrives in time for us to pay bills as they fall due and manage any other risks along the way.

Small charities are agile and able to flex

We need to know what good looks like for our charity and then act promptly when the numbers show us that we are departing from this. Our response will depend on what is taking us of piste and by how far.

"Awesome session"

Financial leadership is not always easy. We might not always have the answers but there is a lot we can all do to build the financial resilience of our charities by building our own financial confidence.

Take the fear out of finance

In our experience, there are two barriers when it comes to getting on top of the numbers.

There is a technical barrier and and an attitudinal barrier.

Our support has been designed to overcome both.

Simple, clear support

We take our time to explain finance simply and clearly.

We meet you where you are and we never judge.

We believe that everyone has an inner finance director.

We provide excellent training and useful resources

No-one comes fully formed

Many folks tells us that finance is not their first love. We think that's perfectly reasonable. We also know that no-one comes fully formed and that everyone has an inner finance director.

It is our experience that with a bit of support, we can all build the knowledge, skills and behaviours that we need to lead a financially resilient small charity.

But what about the unknown unknowns?

Honestly, there will always be some shadows. But there is an awful lot we can do to shine the light far and wide.

Happily, knowledge gaps can be filled easily.

For Trustee duties, the Charity Commission gives a very clear steer. For the day to day, we cover a lot of this in our regular training

We also have heaps of useful stuff on our resources page.

Help! I am an imposter!

Basic finance skills like the ones needed in most small charities, can often be fairly easily developed by putting our new found knowledge into practice and keeping on top of it all regularly and consistently.

We also need a charity accounting specialist in the mix - as a freelancer, treasurer, independent examiner - to ensure we are preparing information in the right way.

We always recommend spending at least one day a month on the finances; half looking backwards, half looking forwards.

The biggest barrier is not techincal

Truth be told, the biggest barrier to financial resilience is not technical. It is attitudinal. Folks tell us that they find finance scary, anxiety provoking, boring.

We get it. It can be all of those things. And we all have a barrier when it comes to tackling the numbers. Many of us think this barrier is time.  In our experience it is always time AND something else. Fear, anxiety, uncertainty, boredom etc.

We always recommend determining the root cause, finding a work around (out-sourcing, working group, good training, pack of biscuits etc. ) and doing it anyway. Never let one spreadsheet get in the way of changing the world.

"THE FACILITATOR WAS INSPIRING, KNOWLEDGEABLE, EXPERIENCED, ENCOURAGING AND SUPPORTIVE"

We are reflective practitioners and always seek feedback on every training session that we deliver. Our feedback is very good. Work with us and build your financial confidence.

Not all heroes wear capes

Financially resilient charities are led by financially confident people.

You don't need to be a chartered accountant. You do need to be able to take finance informed decisions and be able to manage the financial risks.

Let's not overcomplicate it

Our approach breaks finance down into simple bitesize chunks.

We empower you to lead with financial compliance, competence and confidence.

Our support is perfect for accidental finance heroes

We provide training, events and resources

We are small charity specialists. We are finance professionals. We have worked with many 100s of small charities over the years and we have evaluated constantly. We have condensed all the feedback, questions and reflections and baked them into the support we provide.

Sharing best practice

We run many free sessions for small charities throughout the year. Our Lunch and Learn sessions aim to share insights from other small charities and are a great way to sit back with a coffee, reflect on the way things are and learn from others.

Our free training sessions aim to share practical tools and help us refine our learning programmes making sure they are designed and delivered in a way that is small charity friendly.

Small charity training specialists

When we started out in 2018, there were no specialist providers dedicated to providing live small charity finance training. Since then, we have become the go to provider for quality, small charity specialist training.

We provide our own training programmes. Our Academy has a Foundations Programme and a Leadership Programme. All of our sessions are short, succinct biteize sessions which go back to first principles in plain English. Perfect for accidental finance heroes.

We deliver commissioned learning programmes for funders, infrastructure bodies and membership organisations. Get in touch to commission us today
