Welcome to the Directory of Social Change x Embrace Finance Academy Foundations Programme,  a short course designed specifically for small charities. We know that finance can be tricky. It is highly regulated and there is a lot to think about. It is very technical and can get quite overwhelming. Some of it is boring. And a lot of folks find it anxiety provoking. Especially when the numbers don't go the right way.


These sessions have been designed for, and refined with, small charities. Over 9 bitesize sessions, we will guide you through the key financial practices that will help you manage your charity's finances with greater confidence.


Whether you're new to financial management or looking to strengthen your skills, these nine essential steps will provide you with the tools and knowledge to build longer term financial resilience.

All sessions are aimed at charities with an annual income up to £500k pa but folks from larger charities may also find them a useful refresher. Each individual session is 75 minutes long and comprise 60 minutes of broadcast content with 15 minutes of Q and A at the end.

01 | Introduction to Charity Finance


Join us for a 75-minute online session designed specifically for small charities, where we'll explore how to manage the finances so that we are compliant, resilient and leading with financial confidence. Finance doesn’t have to be a mystery. In fact, we have just three jobs:

 

  • Getting on top of the recording so that we know what the numbers are
  • Getting on top of the reporting so that we know what the numbers mean, and
  • Getting on top of the financial decision making to lead with financial confidence

 

In this friendly and practical session, we introduce the finance cycle and how to record and report financial information for purposeful, resilient financial decision making. You don’t need to be a finance expert to build a financially resilient charity—you just need a clear understanding of the essentials.

02 | Introduction to Bookkeeping

 

We invite you to join us for a 75-minute online session designed specifically for small charities wanting to get on top of keeping good financial records. In the world of small charity finance, all roads lead to bookkeeping. It is the one of the key foundations of good financial management. Investing time in bookkeeping will ensure that your charity can keep track of grants and reserves, and prepare year-end accounts with (relative) ease.


During this session, we will review how to maintain a simple bookkeeping system in Excel and in an online accounting platform and what to consider when moving from one to the other. We will introduce essential financial concepts and guide you through key bookkeeping tasks. This session is ideal for anyone looking to establish and maintain financial records that are both compliant and actually useful.

03 | Introduction to Budgeting

 

We invite you to join us for a 75-minute online session designed specifically for small charities wanting to plan effectively for the financial year ahead. We will introduce the fundamentals of budgeting and what to consider when putting together a budget that will lead us (with a fair wind) towards a more financially sustainable future.


This session will focus on how to create and manage a simple budget for your small charity, including how to handle a small number of restricted grants – on a full cost recovery basis - and track the impact on reserves. This session is perfect for leaders looking to build confidence in financial planning and strengthen their charity’s financial resilience.

04 | Introduction to Management Accounting

 

We invite you to join us for a 75-minute online session designed specifically for small charities wanting to prepare regular financial information to support their financial decision making.


We will introduce the what, the why and the how of management accounting. In this session, we’ll explain what management accounts are, why they are crucial for your charity’s financial resilience, and what a good set of management accounts might look like for a small organization.


You'll leave with a clearer understanding of how to use this regular finance report to make informed decisions, improve financial decision making, and support the sustainability of your charity.

05 | Introduction to Annual Accounting and Independent Examinations


We invite you to join us for a 75-minute online session designed specifically for small charities wanting to explore annual accounts and independent examinations.


We will explore when we need to prepare receipts and payments accounts and when we need to prepare accruals accounts - and the main differences between the two, we will introduce the Charities SORP and some very useful Charity Commission templates and we’ll also discuss what to look for when selecting an independent examiner. Perfect for those looking to gain a solid understanding of year-end financial reporting.

06 | An Introduction to Cashflow Forecasting

We warmly invite you to join us for a 75-minute online session designed specifically for small charities. We will look at what a cashflow forecast is, why it’s an essential small charity finance tool and how to prepare a simple cashflow forecast.


During this session, we'll introduce the importance of the "going concern" principle, and what to consider when things look concerning. A good budget will tell us how much is coming in and how much is going out. A cashflow forecast tells us whether the money coming in will come in time or not. A good cashflow forecast is essential in all small charities.

We will introduce the concept of reserves and explore why they are crucial for our financial resilience. We will cover what is required of us by the Charity Commission, how to calculate what we actually have, how to determine how much we need and what a good policy looks like. We’ll also discuss why reserves are essential for financial stability and what to do when building reserves is a challenge. This session is perfect for leaders looking to build longer term financial resilience.

09 | An Introduction to Trustee Finance Duties

 

We warmly invite you to join us for a 75-minute online session tailored specifically for Trustees and leaders of small charities. Being a Trustee is one of the most rewarding roles there is and while leading with financial confidence is one of our key jobs no-one comes to it fully formed.


In this session we will introduce the five core finance duties outlined in the Charity Commission’s guidance Managing Charity Finance. We will clarify our core finance duties, introduce key questions to ask and signpost to useful tools to help you build your financial confidence.
